This series consists of correspondence, telegrams, and reports of field dentists. Correspondence discusses dentist travel schedules, patient treatments, and the purchase of equipment. Reports include the Consolidated Report of Oral Examinations and the Report of Dental Examinations which are statistical summaries of the total number of examinations conducted and the treatments required at each site visited. Dentists visited agency day schools, boarding schools, hospitals and sanatoriums. Agencies represented in the records include the following from Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah include the Colorado River Agency, Ft. Apache Agency, Navajo Agencies, Hopi Agency, Pima Agency, Truxton Canon Agency, Sells Agency, San Carlos Agency, Jicarilla Agency, Mescalero Agency, United Pueblos Agency, Consolidated Ute Agency and the Uintah and Ouray Agency; also included are the Winslow Sanatorium; the Phoenix Indian School and Phoenix Indian Sanatorium; and the Santa Fe and Albuquerque Indian Schools.

The Sherman Institute was established in 1900, as a successor to the Perris Indian School (Perris, Calif.), after the water supply to the previous school was deemed insufficient. By 1901 a site in the city of Riverside was selected, at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Jackson Street. On July 19, 1901, the cornerstone was laid for the new school building of Sherman Institute, and the school officially opened on September 9, 1902.
